Classroom Behaviour Management Tips

As a teacher or teaching assistant behaviour management is an integral part of your job. Aquinas Education have put together a list of different classroom behaviour management tips for you to use on your next supply day. We have also put in some tips for how to implement your own behaviour routines in your class.

Behaviour Tips for your own class:

  1. Classroom management begins before the students arrive.
    • Make sure to have a seating plan arranged before students arrive on their first day. If you have received some handover notes use them to arrange your plan and don’t be afraid to change it if you need to.
  2. Move around
    • The classroom is your space. Look into a presentation clicker so you can easily move around the classroom.
  3. Shadow a student
    • If a student is presenting the same disruptive behaviour each day, take some time to shadow them on a task. You will learn how they learn and how they work problems out. It can create a positive interaction with your student.
  4. Classroom Rules
    • As a class create your own classroom rules. Take some time to create some classroom rules altogether. Discuss what the school rules are and what rules the students think might be important. Have these up on display in the classroom to refer to.
  5. Check-In
    • Make sure you are having frequent check-ins with your class about their emotions. Students can feel big emotions and not always know how to handle them and communicate them. Regular check-ins mean you can potentially de-escalate situations.
